When we talk about teeth, it’s often about when and how you need to brush! But we decided to lighten up the conversation today. So, rather than tell you what you may already know or what you need to know, let’s have a little fun with what you probably don’t know and may want to know — for that next trivia game!

Did You Know…?

  • …that blacksmiths (metalsmith who creates tools, cooking utensils, and other items by forging metals with fire) performed dental procedures in the 1800s? Probably not our first choice for dental treatment!
  • …that from the 15th through early 20th century, toothbrushes were created by attaching hog’s neck hair to a narrow piece of wood or bone? Ready to buy one? If you’re interested in learning a bit more about changes in dentistry over the last century, jump over to our post titled, “Technology and Your Smile: How Dental Advancements Have Changed Dental Treatment.”
  • …that your set of teeth is as inimitable as fingerprints? Even twins have unique dental records. Consequently, dental records are one way to identify people.
  • …that flossing daily can actually increase your life expectancy by up to six years? Not only does flossing help prevent gum disease, but it also plays a role in preventing heart disease!
  • …that the first “dental brushes” were actually “chewing sticks” made from twigs pulled off aromatic trees and used by the Babylonians over 5500 years ago? They chewed the twig and used the frayed end as a toothbrush and the other end as a pick to remove debris between the teeth.
  • …that the Mayan civilization who occupied much of Mexico and Central America were proud of their cosmetic dentistry: they embedded gems in teeth! Although it provides plenty of sparkle and bling, we don’t recommend boring any holes in your teeth if you want them to last!
  • …that dental floss was originally made of fine silk thread, and was replaced by nylon in the 1940s and 1950s in the U.S. Silk sounds luxurious, but we’ll stick with the improved version of nylon that’s commercially available worldwide.
  • …that your tooth enamel is stronger than your bones? In fact, tooth enamel is the hardest material in your body. Take care of your teeth and they will be strong enough to last a lifetime.
