Dental Implants: Facts and Stats

Archeological digs have uncovered rudimentary dental implants, tooth-like pieces of bamboo, shells, and even metal lodged in human jawbones dating back to 2000 BC.  Dental implants have evolved considerably over time, culminating in the 1950s with the discovery that incorporating titanium allows the dental implants to naturally fuse with bone.  Fast forward to today, where dental implant advancements have led to dental implant restorations that preserve natural bone, stimulate growth, and provide a near-perfect simulation of a tooth rooted to the jawbone.

Dental implants are a revolutionary way to replace missing teeth with customized, biocompatible synthetic teeth that are properly positioned with a synthetic root anchor system.  The bottom line for most patients is that dental implants appear and function just like your natural teeth.

So how many people need and receive dental implants?

According to the global Foundation for Oral Rehabilitation (FOR), 69% of adults age 35-44 have lost at least one permanent tooth to an accident, tooth decay, and gum disease, and more than ¼ of adults age 74 and above have lost all their permanent teeth. [1]   Along these lines, other studies show that over 35 million Americans are missing all their teeth in one or both jaws.[2] Dental implants are becoming the standard treatment to replace missing teeth and improve the lives of patients.

In 2006, the American Academy of Implant Dentistry (AAID) noted that over 5.5 million implants were performed by dentists in the United States. [3]  According to the AAID, over 3 million people in the United States have implants and an additional 500,000 people are added to this number annually.  The growth rate of dental implant procedures is expected to continue to expand, as dental professionals appreciate that it is the only technique that truly preserves and stimulates bone growth.

What is the success rate of dental implants?

While several estimates range between 95-99%, studies in the Journal of Oral Implantology show success rates of dental implants is at 98%.[4]
